After dealing with both injuries and a void of offense in two straight losses, the state #12-ranked Pasadena City College women's soccer team had a tough task in playing at #6 Chaffey on Friday. The Lancers responded with three first-half goals on their way to a 4-1 win.
PCC (5-3 record) struck first on the first of two goals by Raylyn Laney, who took off on a breakaway to reach the net in the 22nd minute. Just two minutes later, the Lancers went up 2-0 as Esmeralda Jaquez headed in a corner kick by Isabella Nersesyan.
Five minutes before halftime, Iris Pollard took a cross from Alyssa Avila and finished for a commanding 3-goal advantage. In the 60th minute, Laney drove in a shot off a cross from Jaquez for an insurance score.
"We found our rhythm today," said PCC head coach Terryn Soelberg. "We knew we absolutely needed a result to get back on track. We went with that mindset and stayed organized throughout the game."
Soelberg said that the "must win" was huge for power points as now the Lancers are #6 in the SoCal Region. Chaffey (3-2-1) is in the top five.
On Sept. 16, the Lancers lost at Santa Barbara City College, 3-0, as the Vaqueros also are in the top five in power points. That defeat followed a last-minute loss at #15 Orange Coast, 2-1, on Sept. 12. OCC pulled ahead 1-0 in the 80th minute before Pasadena tied it on Kristina Snowden's header goal off a corner kick rom Nadia Aguilar in the 83rd minute.
OCC won it with an Alexis Lastra goal in the last minute as a tie turned into a heart-breaking loss for the Lancers. Gaioi Mahe was outstanding in the PCC net as she made nine saves.
PCC returns to Robinson Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in a 4 p.m. contest against Citrus.
