Women's Soccer Snaps SCC Winless Streak

The Pasadena City College women's soccer team finally ended a South Coast Conference winless streak that dated back two years and 15 games (0-12-3) on Friday with a 1-0 victory over East Los Angeles College. Naturally, the Lancers won on the road as the team is 7-2 in away matches this season.

In the Lancers first win in SCC North (that streak 13 games, 0-11-2) play since the conference split into two, 5-team divisions last year, PCC struck for the game-winning goal in the 67th minute when Emily Matthiesen sent a corner kick that was headed into the net by fellow sophomore Summer Hofstad. It was Matthisen's team-leading ninth assist of the year. Goalie Lilly Urumieh made nine saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. 

Pasadena (9-6-3 overall) moved out of last place in the SCC North with the win as ELAC (5-10-3, 0-5-2) dropped to fifth place by itself. The Lancers have an opportunity to place third in the difficult division if they can defeat Mt. San Antonio in their home finale on Tuesday, Nov. 7 (3 p.m. at Robinson Stadium. The Mounties are 2-3-1 in conference and PCC potentially can finish in a tie with them for third with a victory. Both teams also play their season finales on Friday, Nov. 10.

"We've had some lousy luck in some of the conference ties and a few losses where a bad bounce late in a game hurt us," said PCC head coach Reggie Rivas. "But we deserved to end this tough streak and we earned this victory. We've won nine games this season and we have a good team. If we played in another conference, we're challenging for a title right now. All of a sudden, we are talking third place if we can put some good efforts together these last few games."

PCC also stopped a nine-year winless drought against ELAC teams (15 games, 0-7-8).
