The Pasadena City College women's basketball climbed back over the .500 mark with Wednesday's 78-51 rout over host Citrus.
The Lancers are 4-3 on the season under interim head coach Alexa Mirzaian and received a huge performance from 6-foot-1 sophomore guard/forward Celine Bolton-Ford, who poured in 25 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, adding four steals and three assists.
Citrus (2-5) only trailed 29-26 by halftime, but PCC opened up multiple 16-point leads in the third quarter with the Owls cutting it to 11 by the end of the period, 56-45. In the fourth quarter, Kamora Fletcher scored a layup, then Bolton-Ford made a steal and basket as the Lancers never were threatened on their way to the road victory.
Other high-end performers v. Citrus were Lyndsey Valverde with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists, Fletcher totaling 13 points, seven boards, five helpers and two steals, and Monica Menzies tallying 12 points, including a trio of treys, six rebounds, four assists.
Jhavmine Ave had a game-high 28 points for Citrus.
On Nov. 20 at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium, the Lancers lost a tough one v. Fullerton, 60-56, after leading the Hornets in the final minute. Menzies, who drove the lane for a layup that gave PCC a 56-55 advantage with 48 seconds left. But Fullerton responded with five straight free throws, four by Erin Choi, that sent the Lancers to the home defeat.
Menzies made 9-for-14 from the field on her way to a game-high 22 points plus nine rebounds. Valverde added 18 points, dishing out five helpers, and defending two steals and two blocks. Bolton-Ford contributed eight points, nine boards, and three blocks off the bench. Choi was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line to score 15 points while Hailey Lakey notched 16 for Fullerton.
After the Thanksgiving break, Pasadena returns to action at the Santa Ana Round-Robin Tournament, facing in order: Bakersfield on Thursday, Dec. 4 (1 p.m.), Riverside City on Friday, Dec. 5 (2 pm), and LA Harbor on Saturday, Dec. 6 (12 noon).
