There was no player more disappointed on the first two days of the CCCAA State Badminton Championships than Pasadena City College's Rebecca Tzou. The sophomore was hoping to perform a magical triple in titles. But first she saw her Lancers lose in the state team final, 11-10, against Fresno City on Thursday. Then on Friday, poised to repeat as a state individual doubles champion, she didn't even get the chance to defend the crown as partner Sandra Maw suffered an injury before their first match that resulted in the duo being eliminated from the competition.
It was looking like a state women's badminton title was finally coming to Pasadena City College. After trailing for much of the CCCAA State Team Championship Team Final v. North champion Fresno City College and down 9-8, the Lancers appeared to be in position to win during the last round of doubles Thursday.
The Pasadena City College women's badminton team punched its ticket to the CCCAA State Championship final with a 12-9 victory over Irvine Valley in the Southern California Regional title match played Wednesday at PCC's Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. It is the Lancers second SoCal championship, the other coming in 2010.
With its 21-0 win over El Camino College-Compton Center on Friday, the Pasadena City College women's badminton team clinched at least a tie for the program's 12th South Coast Conference title. It's the second consecutive crown for second-year head coach Jennifer Ho, who has compiled an impressive 22-1 overall record thus far in her career. The Lancers also extended their SCC winning streak to 19 matches under Ho's leadership.
