Michael Petersen broke a 17-year-old Pasadena City College school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and became the Lancers first South Coast Conference event champion since 2018 at the SCC Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at East Los Angeles College.
The sophomore Petersen swam a 56.43 seconds time, edging Mt. San Antonio's Ray Chun by .20 to win the conference title and snap Keisuke Yagi's PCC record of 56.85 set in 2008. Yagi's mark won him the state title in the event that season held at Saddleback College.
Petersen actually broke the school record earlier in the day in the Prelims morning qualifying swim as he swam a 56.48, but he jetted faster by .05 to solidify the record in style during the afternoon Finals.
The South Coast record in the event was set by Mt. SAC's Taylor Kniesley in 2012 with a time of 55.96.
Petersen also snapped the program's 7-year drought in winning a conference individual event. In 2018, the Lancers won a meet-high nine events, which matched PCC's high under Coach Terry Stoddard. Samuel Jo won three events that season and earned SCC Swimmer of the Meet for his performance.
The Lancers will close out the SCC Championships on Saturday, April 18. A complete recap of the championships will be released on our website.
