BREAKING NEWS--CEREMONY AND DESERT GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO COD NOT HAVING ENOUGH HEALTHY PLAYERS AVAILABLE-SEPT. 20
Prior to this Saturday's Pasadena City College football game v. College of the Desert, the college will recognize the 50th anniversary of the 1974 undefeated Lancers team in a ceremony honoring members of that squad. The ceremony will begin approximately 15 minutes prior to the opening kickoff of 6 p.m. at Robinson Stadium.
The '74 Lancers are the last team to not lose a game during a season as they were 10-0 in the regular season. The Metropolitan Conference champions tied East Los Angeles, 14-14, in a famous state playoff game that was decided on most offensive yards gained thus ending the fabulous season at 10-0-1. The team was enshrined into the PCC Sports Hall of Fame in May of last year.
Directed by PCC Hall of Fame head coach--the late Myron Tarkanian, the Lancers defeated El Camino, 28-13, to complete an undefeated run to the conference title. Highlighted by the play of All-American Second Team linebacker Joe Smith, the team's defense was a beast as it shut out three opponents and limited them to an average of just 11.4 points per game.
Offensively, the team was led by PCC Hall of Famers in All-American lineman Ned Vessey and conference MVP/HOF quarterback Jim Lejay. Punter Ken Crockett and defensive lineman Maylon McCoy also were key performers.
Vessey and Lejay as well as another PCC Hall of Famer and assistant coach on that team Skip Robinson, a former PCC athletic director and 2-time state champion men's track and field head coach, are among those expected to attend the ceremony.
So far 15 players have commited to attending according to the team's organizer for the ceremony--defensive lineman Eric Imhof.
A few of the players will also take part in a ceremonial opening game coin toss.
