Garcia Wins Javelin At Women's Track and Field Season-Opening Meet

Letterman Joelyne Garcia won the javelin throw to highlight the start of the 2023 season for the Pasadena City College women's track and field team at the South Coast Conference Opener Meet held Saturday held at Cerritos College. 

Garcia, who placed 12th at the CCCAA State Championships as a freshman, launched a throw of 106 feet, 10 inches, for the team's lone event victory. Her throw ranks her #2 in the state.

Sophomore Liz Ghazanchian scored third in the discus (113-1) and was fifth in the shot put (33.3.25). On the state leaderboard, she is eighth in the discus and 13th in the shot put.

Garcia took seventh in the discus (83-2). Freshman Melissa Le was sixth in the javelin (75-4) and 11th in the discus (74-0). Newcomer Alexa Oros was 11th in the shot put (27-11).

Sophomore Crystal Ludwig took ninth in the 200 meters (28.95) and was tied for eight with freshman Sophia Malke in the 60 dash (8.83). Malke placed eighth in the 200 in 28.57. 

Second-year Ashley Comanescu was 10th in the 60 (8.97) and 10th in the 200 (28.97). Frosh Sabrina Roman placed sixth in the 800 (3:07.60) and 11th in the 1,500 (6:33.71) while returning sophomore Estrella Camacho-Rodriguez was ninth in the 800 (3:21.53) and 12th in the 1,500 (6:57.71)

Freshman Maria Jimenez scored sixth in the 1,500 in 5:56.30. Julianna Antunez is expected to be a high jumper this season.

PCC will continue training and practices under head coach Innocent Egbunike, then take part in the Viking Invitational on Mar. 10 at Long Beach City College.
