Ung Shatters 2 School Records On Her Way To SCC Co-Women's Swimmer of Year

Carmen Ung extended a remarkable streak for the Pasadena City College women's swim team on Saturday in being named the 2019 South Coast Conference Co-Swimmer of the Year. Ung, who set two school records as part of three individual event wins, represented the seventh straight season in which a Lancer has won the prestigious SCC award. The Lancers placed seventh as a team at the SCC Championships held April 18-20 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Ung won the 50-yard freestyle title with the third fastest time in school history (24.65 seconds) on Thursday, broke her own school record in taking the gold medal in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.33, snapping her Pasadena Invite time by 1.25 seconds) on Friday, then capped her sparkling meet with a new school record in the 200 breaststroke of 2:24.72. She swam 2:25 to originally break the mark in the prelims set by Jocelyn Jo last year of 2:26.77, and her finals time is now the new standard.

Ung, a freshman Mark Keppel High, shared the SCC Swimmer of the Year with Ida Due of El Camino College. Ung now has the state's second-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke as she prepares for the CCCAA State Championships to be held May 2-4 at De Anza College.

Also for PCC directed by head coach Terry Stoddard, Yvette Rosales scored second in the 200 butterfly (2:44.24) and placed fourth in the 1,650 freestyle in a season-best time of 21:19.14. The 200 medley relay squad of Fernanda Alvarez, Ung, Rosales and Anna Herrin scored a 2:13.15 to place fourth in the event. 

Mt. San Antonio won the SCC women's team championship.
