Lancers alumnus Anthony Gonzalez was hired to rebuild the Pasadena City College softball program as he takes over as head coach beginning with the 2027 season.
Gonzalez, who played for the Lancers baseball team in 2015, will coach PCC softball after the program was postponed for the 2026 season while PCC secured an improved practice and game location.
It's expected that Pasadena will now play its home diamond for both practices and games at Jefferson Park, located at 1501 East Villa Street, Pasadena, 91103.
"We are excited to welcome Anthony Gonzalez as the next head softball coach at Pasadena City College," said PCC Dean/Interim Athletic Director Dr. Timi Brown. "Anthony's coaching experience, combined with his strong familiarity with local and regional recruiting areas, will help establish a strong foundation for our softball program. His leadership and commitment to student-athlete success will position PCC softball to achieve competitive excellence for many years to come."
He joins the PCC coaching family after serving as a successful assistant coach at Mt. San Antonio College the last four seasons.
For the Mounties, Gonzalez served as recruiting coordinator on head coach Ruby Rojas' staff for a Mt. SAC program that finished 135-46 (.746 win percentage) from 2023-26, including back-to-back, South Coast Conference championships in '23 and '24. His Mt. SAC teams made two straight 3C2A state tournament appearances during that successful run.
Working with the infielders, Gonzalez helped with the development of All-American shortstop Sarai Raygoza, a state leader in home runs and extra-base hits in 2023. Four of his players earned defensive Gold Glove awards.
Gonzalez's coaching career began in baseball as an assistant coach at Mt. SAC in 2018 and then Cal State Fullerton in 2019. He served briefly as Bishop Amat High head coach during the COVID year of 2020, then took his first collegiate softball coaching gig as an assistant at Citrus College in 2021-22.
As a student-athlete, he played on a CIF title team at Bonita High, then attended Chaffey College in 2014 before settling as a sophomore transfer first baseman to PCC in 2015. He earned a scholarship from the Lancers baseball program and played two years at the University of La Verne, completing a bachelor's degree in criminology. He achieved a master's in exercise science from Concordia University.
"It's an exciting opportunity to return to PCC and the plan is to put out the best team possible to compete against the top teams in the South Coast Conference," Gonzalez said. "I had the opportunity to work under some great coaches and everywhere I've worked, we've been successful."
Gonzalez is married to wife Haley and the couple has one child, A.J., born in September, 2024.
