But on Tuesday, the Lancers got back on the winning train tracks by routing Rio Hondo, 5-1, in their South Coast Conference North Division opener at Robinson Stadium.
PCC (8-3-1 overall) had a number of high-end scoring chances throughout the 90 minutes, connecting first on a terrific roof net header by Ronaldo Garcia off a lob kick from Josue Villa Zavala in the 16th minute.
In the 35th minute, Julian Zuniga, who hit the post on one breakaway, took a lead pass from Reyli Silva as he made a quick turn with his back to the play and immediately snuck a shot into the right corner for a 2-0 lead. It was his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Two minutes later, Jouseph Contreras made a touch kick that deflected off a Rio Hondo defender into the net.
In the second half, David Canales controlled a corner kick by Zuniga and launched a shot in the box to make it 4-0. After Rio Hondo scored on a Sebastian Legarda goal in the 70th minute, PCC capped the scoring as Contreras drove home his second goal on a pass from Junior Martinez Cortes.
The Lancers outshot the Roadrunners, 21-6, while Andre Baktchedjian was a stalwart on the defensive side. Rio Hondo only was able to get a few chances thanks to the Lancers' stifling defense.
PCC is 4-0-2 in home games and stand No. 5 in the SoCal Region power points at a 2.0625 rating. Those power point ratings determine postseason playoff seedings. On Friday, Oct. 10, the Lancers host East Los Angeles in a 4 p.m. conference kickoff.
