The Pasadena City College men's soccer team is off to its best start in 23 years after getting past host Orange Coast, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. The Lancers are undefeated at 4-0-2 and will wait to see if they get ranked on next week's first sports information State Top 20 rankings.
PCC is 16th in state power points (2.09 rating), eighth among SoCal region teams.
Against OCC, Jeremiah Alomo won a tackle play in the box and netted his second of the season for a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. The Pirates responded with a goal by Erik Martinez following a corner kick in the 64th minute to tie it.
Just two minutes later, Junior Martinez Cortes played a through ball from the left side to Evin Lavarreda, who crossed to a waiting Julian Zuniga. The freshman forward drove in his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Goalie Leo Mendoza made his collegiate debut, stopping five Orange Coast shots.
PCC head coach Francisco Cantero said, "Jeremiah had a great game, covering a lot of ground in the midfield. Evin and Junior were our creative guys while Solemon Alveno-Donofrio was excellent in tracking back and getting in on the attack.
"The players are continuing to believe in our system and by seeing the positive results are working harder every game to improve. To have this type of start to a year is more than I could hope for, but certainly we need this if we are to challenge for another playoff spot."
Pasadena looks to stretch the undefeated streak when it next plays at Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday, Sept. 16 in an early 11:30 a.m. kickoff.
