The Pasadena City College men's basketball team had been snake-bit when taking early big leads so when the Lancers leaped ahead 15-4 early on v. visiting Rio Hondo, the squad knew the Roadrunners would eventually make a push.
RHC did just that cutting it to 62-61 with 10:50 left, but the Lancers didn't let go of the lead in snapping a 4-game losing streak in South Coast Conference North Division play, 92-84, on Wednesday night.
Darrius Freeman led five PCC players in double figures in scoring with 19 points plus dishing out a season-high 11 assists. He was 7-for-7 from the free throw and chipped in five rebounds and three steals.
Gor-el Zollicoffer sank four 3-point bombs as part of his 18 points while Julian Thompkins was a key inside the paint in contributing 17 points (8-for-11 from the field), grabbing 12 rebounds with three steals and two blocks. Churchill Ikenador dropped in 15 points and eight boards while Brandin Jackson sparked off the bench on 12 points. Gavin Hollins-Law also made a difference with eight points and six rebounds.
Bobby Reyes scored 23 points and Ryan Osborne tallied 21 for Rio Hondo (9-14, 1-4).
The Lancers have done better when scoring more, sporting a 6-2 record when reaching 80 or more points and a 3-0 mark when they score as much as 90.
PCC hosts Los Angeles City College on Friday, Feb. 6 in a 5 p.m. tip-off at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
