Pasadena City College announced it has added women's flag football as an "emerging sport" and has named Charles Oakley as head coach beginning with a Lancers club team competing in the 2027 spring season. Women's flag football is scheduled to become an official intercollegiate sport at the 3C2A level for the 2027-2028 sports year.

That will up the total sports offered at PCC to 17 and spring sports to eight.

"We are excited to welcome Charles Oakley as the first head coach of Pasadena City College women's flag football, said PCC Dean of Kinesiology, Health & Athletics/Interim Athletic Director Dr. Timi Brown. "As one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, women's flag football is creating incredible new opportunities for female student-athletes.

"Coach Oakley's successful coaching experience and strong familiarity with local and regional recruiting areas make him the ideal leader to launch our program. His leadership will help build a strong foundation for sustained growth and provide competitive opportunities for local high school girls to continue their athletic and academic journeys at PCC while striving for competitive excellence for many years to come."

Oakley comes to PCC after serving as offensive coordinator/assistant coach at Saddleback College from December, 2024 through this '26 season. At Saddleback, he helped guide the Bobcats to a 17-7 record and a No. 20 national ranking by WCFFB (womensflagfootball.com).

Saddleback advanced to the Orange Empire Conference semifinals and earlier in the season were selected by WCFFB as the January Flag Football Team of the Month. The Bobcats had wins over four different 4-year university clubs in Redlands, Hope International, Pomona Pitzer and Long Beach State.

Oakley's flag football coaching experience includes earning three championship titles as co-head coach for Cal Poly Humboldt's intramural co-ed club in 2016-2017. At Corona Centennial High, he served as assistant flag football coach/varsity co-offensive coordinator from June, 2023 through 2025.

He coached prep boys football, serving at Centennial as an assistant wide receivers coach from 2012-2013. At Humboldt, he was played on the football team in 2015-2016 and later became a scout team coach. He also was an assistant at Schurr High in 2018-19.

Oakley was a 3-time, scholar-athlete at Centennial from 2008-2010. He played on two Big VIII League champions, two CIF champions, a state champion in 2008 and state runner-up in 2010.

He earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and exercise science at Humboldt.
